The Per Diem Employee Health Nurse at The Commons provides wellness care to Loretto employees.  Ensures a satisfactory level of health for employees and volunteers, enabling them to perform their assigned duties at an optimal level.  Provides direct care or referral to appropriate health care providers.  Responsibilities also include new employee pre-employment health assessment and drug testing, annual employee assessments, and patient care. 


Job Duties Specific to This Position:

  • Coordinates and conducts annual health assessments for current employees and volunteers, completing charts and required paperwork. Tracks and maintains statistics on completion of assessments. Monitors and takes corrective action as needed.
  • Performs and documents new employee and volunteer pre-employment health assessments.
  • Provides basic and urgent healthcare service to all employees. Evaluates minor illnesses within their scope of practice. Offers basic first aid and emergency assessments with appropriate triage and referral. 
  • Assists with off-site facility employee health matters, which may include flu shots, PPDS, and annual assessments.
  • Performs routine blood draws and work ups for Rubella and Rubeola titers, mumps, varicella and Hepatitis-B. Reviews Hepatitis-B status with established criteria and immunization status for all employees and volunteers.  Provides Hepatitis B education to employees and keeps documentation.
  • Administers tuberculosis tests and performs all follow-up readings.
  • Provides HIV counseling per procedure and follows regulations for needle sticks.
  • Completes all documentation thoroughly and promptly. Records test results and initiates action as required.  Files annual assessments in charts accurately.
  • Communicates any issues appropriately, including negative outcomes and lack of response by employees.
  • Develops and delivers safety training to prevent recurrence of injuries.
  • Performs chart audits on request to ensure the general health of the organization.
  • Adheres to all policies, procedures and DOH/third party agency regulations.
  • Actively participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team.



  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Current NYS license and registration in good standing as a Registered Nurse.
  • 2-3 years' experience in acute care setting.
  • Recent experience in worker’s compensation care, administration and documentation desired.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, Workman’s Compensation laws and FMLA guidelines is helpful.
  • Knowledge of blood borne pathogens and infection control techniques.
  • Strong patient assessment skills.
  • Current knowledge of nursing best practices.
  • Knowledge of DOH regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with managers, employees and providers, in person, on the phone, and in writing using a clear, straight-forward, and professional manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient with MS Office and able to learn new software rapidly.
