Overview

The Manager, Recreation coordinates and manages recreation and wellness service delivery to promote the highest practicable level of physical, mental and psychosocial functioning of residents across the continuum of Independent Living, Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing and Memory Care Programs. Responsibilities include programming, scheduling, budgeting, quality assurance, documentation, volunteerism, staff supervision, regulatory compliance and marketing.

Responsibilities

Job duties specific to this position:

  • Manages, organizes and leads group and individual recreation programs according to the resident’s plan of care. Maintains current knowledge of all medical contraindications to ensure resident's well-being.
  • Ensures resident lives are maintained to the fullest extent possible by providing a variety of meaningful activities, outings and contact with the community.
  • Markets and communicates all events and activities to promote awareness of the recreation offerings to individual residents, staff and families. Provides information and education as needed.
  • Organizes, coordinates and assists residents on outings to restaurants, cultural events, concerts, etc. May transport residents to activities as needed.
  • Assists with new resident adjustment. Completes resident assessment, reassessment and documentation as needed.
  • Uses leadership skills to motivate and empower others, to inspire, and create an environment that fosters choice and personal well-being.
  • Uses collaboration skills and teamwork to coordinate with other departments on special events.
  • Markets and communicates events and activities to promote awareness of the service offerings to individual residents, staff and families. Provides information and education as needed.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation as required by State and Federal regulations, which includes completion of portions of the MDS, EMR/Truchart, care plans, progress notes, initial (annual, 6 month, quarterly and Change of Status) assessments.
  • Maintains statistical data on daily activity attendance and hours of participation.
  • Monitors resident/participant status and reports observed changes in conditions appropriately and promptly to supervision.
  • Actively participates in interdisciplinary care plan meetings.
  • Transports residents to and from activities.
  • Reports and documents all incidents and accidents immediately and per established procedures.
  • Schedules and documents individualized recreation sessions to identified residents and ensures independent activity, social, and stimulation needs are being met.
  • Ensures resident supervision and safety during all special events, community outings, and programs.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends in therapeutic recreation service delivery by staying apprised of new resources, techniques, interventions, clinical skills, etc.
  • Attends and participates in continuing education activities through in-services, seminars, and training sessions to meet established requirements.
  • Participates in orientation of new Recreation Therapists.
  • Advocates for recreational resources i.e. adaptive equipment, reading material, etc. for residents to maximize independence and group participation. Uses Loretto equipment at it is intended to maximize useful life. Initiates maintenance requests as required.
  • Participates in family conferences and discharge planning meetings as needed.
  • Keeps self and staff current in trends and best practices in Recreation Therapy.
  • May work weekends and evenings as scheduling dictates.

  • Ensures adequate skills, training and development among staff.
  • Manages and supervises assigned personnel, including performance management, scheduling, and orientation. With the Director and Human Resources guidance, makes or approves recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, disciplinary actions, terminations and similar actions. In conjunction with HR, resolves grievances and other personnel problems in a fair, timely and consistent manner.
  • May have input to or recommendations for operating budgets.

Qualifications

  • Pay range: $63,000 - $70,000 annually, based on experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation & NCTRC Certification (CTRS).
  • 5+years experience in Recreation Therapy.
  • 3+ years supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of health care regulations and guidelines as they pertain to recreation therapy.
  • Experience with older adults.
  • Some experience with dementia care desired.
  • Customer service focused.
  • Demonstrated the ability to assess residents and develop effective care plan.
  • Ability to lead, guide and motivate staff.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with clients, residents, and families from diverse backgrounds who may have physical, sensory and mental impairments.
  • Ability to analyze problems, plan resolution strategies, implement solutions and evaluate outcomes.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office and able to learn new software rapidly.

An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
